LGBTQ+ Responses to Repression (free session)

Attacks on LGBTQ+ people, the push by national anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups for free rein to discriminate, and anti-trans legislation aimed at restricting the rights of trans people have been on the rise. Trans, non-binary, and queer communities face ever intensifying stigma, violence, and barriers. This anti-trans legislation includes bills that seek to restrict access to safe restrooms, gender affirming healthcare, athletics, and the ability to update identity documents. It is relentless and constantly shifting. While this may seem like a new kind of discrimination, the truth is that we have been here before, we are not starting from scratch, and we are not going anywhere. We have a history rooted in resistance and the struggle for recognition and acceptance.

This session will be helpful for anyone invested in supporting and protecting LGBTQ+ people. If you are committed to building fair, inclusive, welcoming, and equitable practices and spaces for the LGBTQ+ community, please join Think Again Training & Consulting for a one-hour, interactive session to hear how we’re approaching these challenges, and to share ideas and strategies with like-minded colleagues. This session will:

Expand understanding of the variety of identities, communities, experiences, assets and barriers among the LGBTQ+ community

Discuss the history of anti-LGBTQ adversity with a focus on our communities’ practices of resistance

Identify tools we can learn from our recent and not-so-recent history for both individual and community survival, advocacy and resistance (including 20th century LGBTQ movements, AIDS activism, trans movement responses to anti-trans legislation of the past few years, and participants’ own experiences)

Practice interpersonal allyship behaviors and positive practices for supporting each other within the LGBTQ+ communities across differences of race, gender, immigration experience, socioeconomic status, role in the university, etc.
