Intervale Center Completes $1 Million Capital Campaign

With the help of almost two hundred generous donors and community support, the Intervale Center is pleased to announce the completion of Celebrate Intervale, a $1 million capital campaign to increase the productivity, accessibility and beauty of the Intervale. The Intervale Center, a food and farming non-profit, manages 340 acres of open space in the heart of Burlington, VT for agriculture, conservation and recreation.

Implementation of infrastructure and trail upgrades has been happening over the past several months, with work continuing throughout the year. This winter, Building Heritage has been transforming the historic Calkins farmstead, which was the last working dairy farm in Burlington and now serves as the Center’s home. In addition, a 1920s silo was stabilized with the insertion of handcrafted wood and metal rings and relocated to the back of the Community Barn, which is getting a new foundation, floor, and sliding doors. As the days get warmer, a new driveway will be added and landscaping installed, all in time for the summer events season.

“This campaign is a wonderful example of the power of community,” Travis Marcotte, the Center’s executive director explained. “The Intervale is a special place that brings people together around good food and open space. Whether you come for Summervale, to pick up your farm share or to use the trails, the Intervale is a place for the community, and the improvements we’re making to our buildings and trails are supported by and also benefitting this community.”

The capital campaign was overseen by a committee of community leaders including Cat Carvelli, Rob Downey, Leslie Halperin, Neale Lunderville, Meg Smith and Charlie Tipper. Campaign committee chair, Rob Downey, stated, “As a longtime supporter of the Intervale Center, I was drawn to lead this campaign because these investments will give Intervale farmers and the Intervale Conservation Nursery the tools they need to build a community food system that is good for people, the environment and our local economy.” We also want to acknowledge the passing of our friend and campaign committee member, Ian deGroot, whose advice and positivity were instrumental to our success. Ian’s legacy will live on in the impact he had on our organization, and our hearts are with his family and friends.”
