City Market Opens South End Co-op

As of Thursday, Burlington is home to two community-owned food cooperatives!

Burlington, VT – City Market’s long anticipated second store (207 Flynn Avenue, Burlington) opens to the public on Thursday, November 16, 2017. Regular hours at the South End store are 7am to 9pm daily with many of the same amenities the community enjoys at the Downtown store.

John Tashiro, City Market’s General Manager, notes that “the Co-op started this expansion project back in 2012 when we completed our first market study and opened up discussions with our Members and the greater community about a second store. Our entire Co-op team, Board of Directors and Membership has worked hard over the last five years to bring this exciting dream to fruition. We’re grateful for the community’s support and look forward to welcoming everyone to the South End store on Thursday.”

The South End cooperative includes expanded space for produce, meat & seafood, cheese, prepared foods, indoor café seating and areas for the community to congregate. Additional amenities include over 70 bike parking spaces, 3 outdoor murals, a café that opens to the outdoors in warmer weather, improved sidewalk access, 115 parking spaces, 2 electric charging stations, a children’s discovery garden, and much more! The South End space includes a teaching kitchen and community room that the Co-op’s education team will put right to use with their December classes and events.

City Market’s ribbon cutting ceremony for the South End store will take place on Tuesday, November 21 at 9am at the south entrance. Light snacks and coffee will be available after the ribbon cutting, in the South End store’s Community Room, with remarks from invited guests including Mayor Miro Weinberger. “The Co-op’s intent is to create a successful and vibrant market in the South End and create more opportunities for community support and engagement as well as employment with above market wages and benefits. We think the South End project has been successful in these areas and we’re excited to share it with our greater community!” says Tashiro.
