Vermont Works for Women

Youth Partnership VISTA Member | Paid Internship

Category: Non-profit

Location: 32a Malletts Bay Ave, Winooski, VT, USA

Vermont Works for Women (VWW) is seeking a VISTA member for the 2023-2024 year to help us expand programs and improve career exploration curricula for middle and high school youth. Do you like making connections with people and supporting youth in their development? Do you like working in a team environment with the potential to try new things and expand your skills? If you are inspired by VWW’s mission of promoting economic justice by advancing gender equity and supporting women and youth at every stage of their career journeys, then keep reading!

VWW is committed to connecting participants to experiences that will put them on a path to economic independence. We do not expect that all youth in our programs will go on to become carpenters or welders—but by exposing them to tools, role models, and transferable problem-solving skills through programs like Rosie’s Girls, Career Challenge Day, and Women Can Do, we provide an expansive array of career options for students to consider as they navigate school and plan for life after graduation. We also support our staff to take leadership roles in projects and work on their own growth. We are a transparent organization that values inclusive decision making.

The VISTA will focus on helping three of our main youth programs expand:

  • Rosie’s Girls camps and afterschool programs for middle schoolers,
  • LIFT trades training for high schoolers and recent grads,
  • and our annual Women Can Do conference for high schoolers.

The VISTA would help us build an organized, efficient system to replicate Rosie’s Girls throughout the state, increase and diversify Rosie’s Girls partner sites, increase the number of girls and gender expansive youth participating, update Rosie’s Girls curriculum, and create a network of trained volunteers to facilitate Rosie’s Girls programs throughout Vermont.

LIFT (Launching Inclusive Futures in Trades) is a pilot program that provides high school girls and gender expansive youth an opportunity to gain in-depth, hands-on experience in a variety of trades fields: carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical and more. The VISTA would help evaluate the pilot session of LIFT, identify viable and diverse partnerships for hosting and facilitating LIFT in future years, create a specialized outreach model for high school youth, and develop a formalized LIFT curriculum.

Finally, the VISTA would help us create a registration system and orientation process for Women Can Do conference exhibitors.

While our main office is located in Winooski, VT, we provide youth programing across Vermont. This position would involve a mix of time in the main office and travel to programming around the State. VWW staff split their time between telework and work in the office.

This is a full-time VISTA position running from August 2023 through August 2024. VISTA provides members with a $20,640 living allowance, relocation allowance, and up to $6,495 education award among other benefits (full list here: Home (servtvista.wixsite.com)) In addition to the VISTA living allowance, VWW will provide a monthly $75 gift card to gas or groceries. VWW reimburses mileage expenses at the IRS mileage rate. Some travel may be required to reach VWW program locations or partners.
