Job Title:   Volunteer and Education Coordinator

Reports to: Director of Field Programs

Job Summary:

This full-time position is responsible for Green Mountain Club (GMC) volunteer and education coordination and development.  This position maintains and supports GMC’s extensive volunteer resources and implements outdoor education workshops, trainings, and events. Work tasks include recruiting volunteers and connecting them with appropriate projects, conducting regular volunteer correspondence, coordinating volunteer recognition, developing and delivering outdoor education programs, training sessions, and skill workshops.

Job Duties:

Education Program

  • Plan, schedule, and implement education events, workshops, and presentations, including the James P. Taylor Speaker Series, Winter Trails Day, outdoor skills workshops, and service trips
  • Work with the director of field programs and field assistants to coordinate trainings for seasonal staff and volunteers. (e.g., Leave No Trace, Wilderness First Aid and Safety, Chainsaw and Crosscut saw, etc.)
  • Publicize workshops and events by writing press releases, calendar announcements, posters, public service announcements, newsletter listings and articles, web site, and publicity flyers. Complete publicity work in conjunction with communications staff

Volunteer Program

  • Respond to volunteer related inquiries and requests
  • Recruit volunteers for projects both on and off the Long Trail System
  • Coordinate the trail and shelter adopter program: work with section volunteer coordinators and staff on recruitment, mailings, and updating databases
  • Coordinate quantitative tracking of all volunteers and volunteer recognition through awards, events including the club’s annual volunteer picnic, and formal acknowledgment

The director of field programs provides direct supervision through informal and scheduled meetings. The volunteer and education coordinator supervises volunteers and interns, at times on a daily basis.  This can demand minimal to substantial oversight depending on the participants and/or project. Supervision skills include providing clear instructions & communications, preparing project materials and work space, and building positive working relationships.

Volunteer and education matters require working with all staff in varying capacities at different times. Fiscal responsibilities include developing program budgets in consultation with the director of field programs and director of finance.


Continue efforts to maintain and increase the GMC volunteer pool.

Deliver education and training programming to support GMC staff, members, volunteers, and the general public.


  • Experience working in outdoor and/or environmental education, community outreach, program development, and administration
  • Demonstrated writing and communication skills, including development of informational and instructional materials
  • Highly-organized, flexible, self-motivated, and creative individual with the ability to multi-task and possesses effective teaching and supervisory skills
  • Strong time-management skills, ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Commitment to customer service.  Must be able to communicate and work well with GMC members, staff, volunteers, hikers, and public land managers. Must be self-motivated and capable of motivating others
  • Experience in teaching environmental education, trail work, and skill-based programs in backcountry recreation preferred
  • Certification or ability to become certified in Wilderness First Aid and Leave No Trace
  • Knowledge of the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail a plus
  • Available for evenings (e.g. weeknight meetings, workshops, and events) and weekend work (e.g. quarterly Saturday board meetings and volunteer training sessions)

Salary Range:

$35,000 to $40,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
