The Job

 

Electric utility resource planning is a key tool to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness and reliability of decarbonizing our grid.  It is used to justify decisions from retirement of fossil generating units to additions of renewables, storage, and demand-side management resources.

You will join our two-person Integrated Resources Planning (IRP) team, who work across a range of states, intervenor clients, and venues to advance the adoption of cost-effective and comprehensive clean energy as a critical component of decarbonization.

 

Our team works remotely but in a highly collaborative fashion.  We make big decisions about project direction together and place a high priority on respectful, supportive teamwork that recognizes the strengths of all team members.

Our recent work includes modeling an all renewable plan to replace a retiring coal plant in New Mexico (the New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission adopted our proposal in its entirety), working with a team that performed transmission, generation, distribution, and financial modeling of a predominately rooftop solar and battery storage plan for Puerto Rico, and developing and modeling equitable and just clean energy programs in a Michigan utility IRP.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

 

As a Managing Consultant or Senior Consultant focused on integrated resource planning, you will:

  1. Lead and support efforts to critically review integrated resource planning and related modeling exercises filed by electric utilities;
  2. Perform your own IRP modeling using software packages such as EnCompass and Aurora to present an alternative to the utilities’ plans;
  3. Provide expert testimony supporting the alternative plan and the modeling performed in Public Utility Commission regulatory proceedings;
  4. Cultivate expertise in new topic areas such as electric vehicles, distribution planning, etc.
  5. Lend your opinion on the strategic direction of the firm; and
  6. Thoughtfully work with clients to assess their needs, resolve conflicts, communicate effectively, and manage competing priorities and deadlines.

 

Necessary Qualifications

 

We would love to hear from you if you have the following qualifications:

  1. Several years of prior experience evaluating power system modeling and/or conducting your own modeling (this could be through professional or academic experience or both). While helpful, experience in the specific modeling tools we use is not required.
  2. Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to successfully stay on top of multiple projects and client communications.
  3. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
  4. An ability to communicate technical subjects effectively.
  5. Excellent English oral and written skills.
  6. Excellent analytical skills.

 

Additional Qualifications Needed for Managing Consultant

 

Additional qualification needed to be considered at the Managing Consultant level:

  1. Existing relationships that will bring in client work in states where EFG does not already do IRP work and that aligns with the mission and strategic direction of the firm.

 

 

 

Desirable Qualifications for Both Positions

 

Other helpful, though not necessary qualifications include:

  1. Experience in related fields such as electric vehicles, utility rate design, demand response, natural gas planning and efficiency, load forecasting, power marketing, energy/environmental justice, wholesale market design, strategic electrification, distribution planning, transmission planning, etc.
  2. A master’s degree or higher.
  3. Experience in statistics, economics, and/or complex data analysis.
  4. Experience with utility regulatory proceedings such as writing testimony and/or providing oral testimony.

Location, Travel and Work Hours: 

You will be able to choose to work remotely or in-person at the Hinesburg, Vermont office, at the Canton, NY office, or a combination of remotely and in one office.  Travel may be needed to testify at regulatory commissions around the country, to participate in conferences, and to Vermont on a semi-annual basis for company-wide staff meetings.

 

While this position is intended to be full-time, we will consider candidates who prefer a part-time schedule (>75% of full-time).
