Laboratory Manager and Technologist | Full Time

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) is seeking a qualified candidate for a full time 30-37.5hr/wk Laboratory Manager & Technologist position in Barre, VT. This role is responsible for all aspects of the operation of an in-house high complexity laboratory in accordance with laboratory protocols. The Lab Manager & Technologist utilizes the lab information system to enter patient data, prepares specimens, performs tests using automated or semi-automated equipment, interprets, correlates, and reports results to PPNNE clinical staff. Other duties include interacting with staff and patients as needed utilizing EHR and telephone technology, tracking usage of and orders lab supplies, coordinate operating hours with supervisor and clinic staff, maintain test equipment, performs quality control, proficiency testing and ensures lab cleanliness as well as developing and maintaining test procedure manual and manage updates/new upgrades.

- Receives test specimens in lab, prepares specimens, and performs tests using automated or semi-automated equipment following established protocols.
- Interprets, correlates and reports results. Reviews the results and determines patterns, trends or correlations. Reports accurate results to PPNNE clinical staff utilizing the laboratory information system.
- Demonstrated competency with the lab information system to provide complete patient information to PPNNE clinicians. Communicates directly with health center staff on lab operating schedule, resolving specimen collection issues, and other problem solving as necessary. May travel to PPNNE centers as needed.
- Consistently demonstrates good judgment when performing clinical tests and making clinical decisions. Consults with colleagues and supervisor as necessary.
- Operates and maintains test instruments in proper working order.
- Adheres to infection control protocols, maintains a clean environment in the lab
- Adheres to quality control protocols, policies, procedures and quality assurance (normal range failures, delta checks)
- Exhibits high levels of self-motivation, initiative, resourcefulness, dependability and ability to work independently.
- Troubleshoots and reports problems as needed
- Works with supervisor, Lab Director and vendor field service engineers to resolve problems
- Adheres to all laboratory policies and procedures, including Compliance, CQI, HIPAA, OSHA, state licensing, PPFA protocols and accreditation guidelines.
- Performs and results proficiency testing
- Reviews, maintains and updates policy and procedure manuals on an annual basis.
- Maintains lab logs
- Responsible for storing, tracking usage of and ordering lab supplies.
- Promotes a continuous learning environment by providing education and guidance to students and staff as required. Participates in professional development and continuing education opportunities whenever possible.
- Ensures excellent communication, collaboration and cooperation with supervisor, coworkers and clinical staff. Ensures a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
- Participates with supervisor and the Director, Medical Services in reviewing lab operations.
- Contributes new ideas to improve laboratory operations, policies and procedures and for meeting PPNNE business goals
- Participates in projects, as assigned
- Implements new tests
- Works with clinical and finance staff to evaluate the feasibility of adding new tests
- Works with lab vendors, lab information system and health center staff to implement all aspects of the test
- Interacts with patients and staff as needed utilizing EHR and telephony technology.
- Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork; understands the interaction between this position and others with whom the position works directly and indirectly.
- Ensures that interactions incorporate PPNNE values of integrity, partnership, customer focus, communication and quality
- Supports the agency’s mission and all of the reproductive health services offered including family planning services, women’s health screenings, testing and treatment of STI’s, birth control methods and abortion services.
- Supports efforts of the agency’s diversity program to provide services that are culturally and linguistically competent; takes the initiative to develop own awareness and knowledge of diversity matters
- Works well with volunteers to achieve the agency’s mission
- Completes all responsibilities according to established protocols, policies and standard practices in the areas of customer service, quality assurance and regulatory compliance programs such as HIPAA (Health Information Portability & Accountability Act), OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) and CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Administration).

QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science preferred
- ASCP, CLS (NCA) accreditation strongly preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science with at least 1 year of laboratory training or experience in high complexity testing OR Associate’s degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution with at least 2 years training or experience in high complexity testing required
- Must have excellent complex problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated general working knowledge and competency within a laboratory environment
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated competency using computer hardware, lab information systems and automated test instruments
- Excellent customer service skills; ability to provide quality services to meet the individual needs of customers
- Demonstrated skills prioritizing and organizing workload
- Superb attention to detail; ability to follow processes and procedures from beginning to end within established timelines
- Ability to handle discreet, confidential information
- Desire to work as part of an interdisciplinary team to meet the needs of health center customers
- Ability to operate office equipment
- Strong supporter of PPNNE mission and all the health services provided

- Must be able to move throughout the agency independently or with minimal assistance
- Must have sufficient visual acuity to read documents, computer screens and other text formats
- Must be able to work in a stressful, fast paced, high volume environment that requires direct contact with diverse staff, clients and vendors
- Sufficient digit dexterity to operate office and medical equipment
- Ability to routinely travel to PPNNE health centers

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

- The range of pay for this position is $30.86 – $44.96/hr based on the level of experience. Access to benefits are available including health, dental, vision insurance, paid time off and retirement fund.
