The Scott Farm, a certified “B” corporation located in Dummerston, Vermont, seeks a full-time business manager. The Scott Farm is wholly owned by The Landmark Trust USA a historic preservation non-profit. The farm includes 571 acres, many historic buildings, a 40-acre heirloom apple orchard, a thriving on-farm market, indoor and outdoor event spaces, hiking trails, and variety of natural resources. Our team seeks someone with the skills to manage agritourism events, human resources, budgets, and regulatory compliance. This person will also work with us on strategic planning, marketing, and opportunities to engage and serve the local community.

We are a small, cohesive organization with a passion for sustainable agriculture, public service and stewardship of the cultural, ecological and economic facets of the farm. We are looking for a highly motivated professional who is organized, insightful, works well with people, and possesses a DIY attitude. This position has responsibility for management of all business operations, and reports to the Executive Director.

About Scott Farm

Scott Farm is one of the nation’s premier heirloom orchards, recognized internationally for its one-hundred-plus varieties of heirloom apples. The Hollywood movie, Cider House Rules, was filmed here in 1999. The historic farm has a dozen buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and adjoins Rudyard Kipling’s Dummerston home, Naulakha, where the British author lived for several years in the late-1800s and penned some of his most famous books. Naulakha and several buildings on the Scott Farm property are available for short-stay vacation rentals through The Landmark Trust USA.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The essential functions and responsibilities for this role are categorized into 3 areas of the business to cover overall business management of The Scott Farm. These areas include Scott Farm Orchard and Farm, Scott Farm Market and Scott Farm Properties.

Scott Farm Orchard and Farm

Develop short-term and long-term strategic goals for orchard and farm by working collaboratively with farm staff and Scott Farm Advisory Board.

Develop and monitor annual farm budget

Maintain Scott Farm’s “B” Corporation Certification and look for opportunities to expand on the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

Manage business development and work with the orchardist to maintain and enhance customer base.

Coordinate marketing and messaging about the farm.

Responsible for coordinating all farm-related regulatory compliance.

Manage annual CSA program and collect all payments and addresses, schedule deliveries, monitor expenses

Coordinate with the Orchardist over the annual H2A staffing needs, statutory compliance, and housing

Manage and assist with selection, interviewing, hiring, and documentation of all additional farm workers

Prepare for and cooperate with all GAP audits as well as conduct required annual GAP training sessions for all orchard workers

Coordinate ordering all supplies related to apple harvest and sales

Assess sales data and sales system information to identify opportunities for improving efficiency and utility.

●Oversee Scott Farm Market Manager

●Working with Scott Farm Market Manager:

Set annual Farm Market dates

Analyze prior year sales and coordinate selection of appropriate inventory

Supervise Market employee(s), train and evaluate performance

Record daily cash sales, safeguard cash, make daily cash bank deposits

Track Market sales activity via ShopKeep (POS sales data software)

Direct annual gift box sales, contents, design and ordering

Develop sales advantages offered by Shopify (on-line sales platform)

Expand on-line store offerings

Scott Farm Properties

Manage the five Farm rental properties: 3 units in the Farmhouse; Stockwell and Cooke Cottages

Monitor and assign maintenance needs as required

Ensure safety and full compliance with insurance carrier’s provisions

Schedule cleaning & maintenance between tenants and advertise vacancies

Monitor clarity of rental agreement form

Respond to inquiries and offer unit tours when requested

Coordinate the scheduling of all Farm events including: non-Farm/Orchard events (pre-harvest season weddings, meetings, silent auctions and gatherings) as well as Farm/Orchard events ( harvest season workshops, heirloom apple day, on the farm dinner) and all related communications, payments, accounting, agreements for both types of events

Post scheduled uses for the Event Room to facilitate opening, closing, and winterizing

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk around all of Scott Farm including over uneven terrain in the orchard and on the farm proper. Ability to climb stairs to and within buildings. Ability to lift and move objects (on occasion) of up to 50 pounds.

Education

B.A/B.S. in agricultural management, business management, or related field, plus at least 5 years of management experience. A lengthy record of successful management experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an individual to perform the functions of the job in an independent manner, but in concert with the vision of The Scott Farm (developed in conjunction with The Scott Farm Advisory Board and Executive Director of The Landmark Trust USA). This requires a high degree of personal awareness when interacting with staff and with the public.
