About Local Motion:

Local Motion is a statewide Vermont not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to making it safe, accessible, and fun for everyone to bike, walk, and roll in Vermont. We work at the state and local levels to advocate for safer and more accessible roads, trails, and sidewalks. In classes and workshops throughout the state, we teach children and adults to keep themselves and others safe on our roads. We offer a range of programs and services to towns, businesses, and individuals so that every Vermont resident and visitor has the opportunity to say yes to the joys and convenience of biking, walking and rolling. We also rent bikes to the public at our Trailside Center and operate the Island Line Bike Ferry connecting the Burlington area to the Champlain Islands.

The Executive Director is responsible for driving the strategic growth of Local Motion while overseeing daily operations. Guided by the new Strategic Plan (2022-2026) and collaborating with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will ensure that the organization delivers the statewide programs and services that meet its objectives while ensuring the organization is fiscally, ethically, and administratively sound. The Executive Director is responsible for strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and influential collaborators, such as State and Federal agencies, business leaders, and community partners. Furthermore, this individual acts as a fundraiser, advocate, and skillful communicator, both outwardly to our constituents and inwardly to our staff, through developing and leading a dynamic, cohesive team and fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment.


 Duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Direct fund-raising efforts and actively cultivate productive relationships with key donors, both existing and prospective
  • Identify and cultivate grant opportunities and oversee development of grant proposals
  • Identify, propose, and implement strategic opportunities for the sustainable growth of the organization
  • Set the tone for Local Motion’s public-facing messaging and serve as the face of Local Motion with stakeholders throughout Vermont, including donors, the business community, local and state government, foundations, and other non-profit/community groups
  • Serve as a key advocate and leading spokesperson for biking, walking, and other modes of active transportation in Vermont
  • Keep the organization focused on goals that are realistic, achievable, and aligned with Local Motion’s strategic plan
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors on development, finance, strategy, and leadership
  • Support Local Motion’s commitment to diversity and inclusion by engaging with culturally diverse communities and bringing safe and accessible biking, walking, and rolling to their members


  • Foster a supportive, creative, and exciting work environment that gives staff members opportunities to grow their skills and succeed in their jobs
  • Manage, directly and through staff, all Local Motion programs to enhance their effectiveness, financial viability, and visibility
  • Lead Local Motion’s fundraising initiatives and campaigns
  • Oversee management of the organization’s finances to strengthen and sustain the organization
  • Expand the organization’s revenue sources to diversify and increase long-term sustainability
  • Ensure the organization adheres to all ethical and legal standards, including employment laws, financial reporting and grant obligations


  • Significant experience in the public, not-for-profit, or relevant private sector, including 3+ years at the senior management or executive level
  • Commitment to the cause of biking, walking and rolling
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, donors, and partners
  • Proven experience and success in fundraising
  • Experience as a public advocate with demonstrated ability to negotiate and advance policy initiatives
  • High level budget development and financial management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, and demonstrated success in inspiring and leading staff
  • Ability to engage a wide variety of individuals and organizations at the local, state and national levels
  • Proven ability to set priorities and manage multiple objectives simultaneously
