Location: 366 Pinnacle Ridge Road, Rutland, VT, USA

Why you should join our team

The Associate Electrical Engineer will design, plan, and supervise the construction of power delivery facilities.  The Engineer will perform power system studies, maintain various engineering software models and troubleshoot and analyze system disturbances.

Expectations are that Associate Electrical Engineer will be learning the technical aspects of the VELCO power system, learn the processes, tools and physical attributes of the system. They will have fundamental knowledge of substation primary electrical equipment and secondary protection and control systems (or the ability to learn these skills).

The average time in this role will typically be between 2-4 years based on the ability of the individual to become self-sufficient in conducting engineering assignments with decreasing management oversight.  VELCO has a four-level career ladder.  The Associate Engineer is the entry-level position

How you will make an impact

  • Maintain system short circuit models, thermal ratings databases and miscellaneous software databases.
  • Perform short circuit studies, fault clearing studies and similar analytical studies and deliver results and recommendations in engineering reports.
  • Develop power system analysis electrical computations and relay coordination studies associated with protective equipment.
  • Development of protective relay setting basis documentation, setting files and associated test plans.
  • Perform analysis of protective relay system operations resulting from system disturbances and explain results to System Operations personnel and others requiring this information.
  • Perform design of protective relay systems, revenue metering, and SCADA monitoring and control systems with input from all company departments. Effectively communicate and coordinate with the company technical disciplines to insure systems and schemes are designed to meet applicable industry standards and the company’s corporate objectives for a safe, reliable and economic transmission system.
  • Develop, review and maintenance of company design standards, specifications, engineering procedures, and equipment configuration settings templates.
  • Work with CAD/GIS group on the development and maintenance of all protection and control drawings.
  • Assist in the commissioning oversight of new and upgraded substations and their subsystems, on both large and small projects, to insure that systems have been installed and commissioned per the “engineered” design.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Who you are

To thrive in this role, you must have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is required.  A Master’s Degree in Engineering or a specialized industry credential such as a Certificate in Power Systems Management, together with a history of sustained exceptional performance, can reduce the time in this entry-level category.

Associate Engineers are expected to take the Engineering Fundamental (FE) exam, the first step to becoming a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Vermont.
