Job Description

The Marketing Director is responsible for creating and implementing SunCommon’s marketing vision, strategy and programs across all geographies and channels. SunCommon is a mission-driven business, and the “way we roll” (our brand voice) is a key element of our success. We make going solar easy and efficient, and in doing so remove one of the largest barriers to the clean energy movement. Our challenge, then, is to continually innovate – integrating the local flavor of new geographies, responding to increasing competitive pressures, connecting with new cohorts of home and business owners – without diluting our voice. Navigating this challenge well is critical to our success in Vermont, New York and to our future growth plans – and it will take experienced marketing leadership to get it done.

Begun in 2012, SunCommon is Vermont’s market-leader in residential community and commercial solar energy.  In the past two years, SunCommon has more than doubled in size, launched new product lines and expanded into New York.  That trajectory will continue.   Experience leading and partnering in a fast-paced, high growth organization is a must for this role. As we continue to expand, the Marketing Director must be able to envision future states, articulate goals and drive communications results through the entire organization.

The Marketing Director works closely with the Vice President of Marketing and Sales and with peer leaders across SunCommon to deliver on our mission through a strong brand, delighted customers, and new and recurring sales. Multiple functional areas support this work, including regional marketing, digital/social channels and direct email, creative design, field marketing, and marketing innovation.


  • Lead marketing strategy development and execution for SunCommon, in collaboration with the VP of Marketing and Sales and in support of enterprise annual marketing goals.
  • Tell the stories that differentiate our company as a market leader using business for good, build customer love, and bring more people into the clean energy movement.
  • Interpret and evolve SunCommon marketing program to recognize changing market conditions and maximize relevance without diluting our brand voice – aka “how we roll.”
  • Develop annual marketing plan, including key initiatives/campaigns, and targets for lead generation, brand health and budget allocation.
  • Regularly monitor, interpret and report on marketing conditions and competitive landscape, and adjust marketing approach as needed.
  • Lead all elements of marketing mix across current and future geographies, and supporting residential, community and commercial segments.
  • Ensure core brand assets are consistent and relevant across all channels and geographies.
  • Analyze and assess program performance and provide regular updates to leadership.
  • Communicate local marketing programs to SunCommon staff and stakeholders.
  • Create and manage the SunCommon Marketing budget.
  • Hire, train, and manage the marketing leadership team.
  • Develop new creative assets (blogs, collateral, shwag, video, etc.) with internal and external resources
  • Partner with the VP of Marketing and Sales, the Communications Director and regional marketing leads to develop market introduction strategies for new geographies as needed.
  • Understand our customers and be their advocate internally.


  • Demonstrated high performance and leadership in the marketing field. 10 or more years experience.
  • Ability to inspire others to action through compelling, creative, and differentiated marketing programs.
  • Analytical and strategic thinker and doer, who can leverage data to anticipate opportunities and drive innovation through the marketing program.
  • Foundational experience leading marketplace analysis, brand positioning and consumer insights projects.
  • Strong communicator who can present ideas to the executive level in writing and in person, and build energy and excitement among SunCommon staff, customers, and the larger community.
  • Experience identifying new marketplaces and launching/expanding into them.
  • Entrepreneurial thinker and doer who sees opportunity in ambiguity and is energized by the prospect of joining the SunCommon “solar coaster”.
  • Excellent self-organization and management skills.Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a business and cultural leader and a member of a team.
