A new position for our growing business, the Communications Director will lead the company-wide Communications vision, strategy and implementation for SunCommon, ensuring that the good works and inspiring stories of our values-led Benefit Corporation are shared across a variety of traditional and digital earned media in our distinctive voice that is consistent, inspired and engaging – one that clearly represents the way we roll. With over 6000 customers and a staff of 150 committed employees — SunCommon churns out story content. The opportunity for the Communications Director lies in connecting those stories to the larger narratives that energize our people, inspire external audiences and help us drive the clean energy revolution.

Begun in 2012, SunCommon is Vermont’s market-leader in residential community and commercial solar energy.  In the past two years, SunCommon has more than doubled in size, launched new product lines and expanded into New York.  That trajectory will continue.   Experience leading and partnering in a fast-paced, high growth organization is a must for this role. As we continue to expand, the Communications Director must be able to envision future states, articulate goals and drive communications results through the entire organization.

This position requires a keen understanding of leading communications and public relations across a dynamic, fast-growing company and customer base. We’re a team-based culture, so partnering with the VP of Marketing and Sales and peer leadership across the company is essential to the role. Additional responsibilities include creating and leading executive/founder speaking opportunities, aligning communications on web/social channels, and leveraging video/still photo assets, etc. to ensure we show up in a consistent way.

It also requires professional yet creative writing, identification of and gathering compelling stories, news pitching skills and a keen understanding of the changing media landscape.  This will be a really fulfilling job.


  • Leads and implements the SunCommon Communications strategy and annual plan, reporting to the VP of Marketing and Sales.
  • Manages, plans and oversees PR execution of product launches, marketing campaigns and social mission/political advocacy endeavors.
  • Strong understanding of mission and brand to drive our brand voice, style and tone.
  • Builds relationships with internal and external audiences — including but not limited to media, customers, employees, business partners, influencers and other internal and external contacts necessary to create and pitch our newsworthy content.
  • Directs executive and staff communications trainings, and develops Communications calendars, messaging guidelines and protocols.
  • Through PR initiatives, builds and maintains SunCommon’s standing within the industry and media landscape as a thought-leader and resource.
  • Acts as an official spokesperson for SunCommon.
  • Oversees Communications budget.
  • Provides copy-writing expertise in the form of press releases, digital/blog content and marketing collateral support.
  • Brainstorms and executes opportunistic news-jacking opportunities when they present themselves.
  • Advises marketing and sales leadership on message development.
  • Manages internal communications supporting corporate and regional strategic initiatives.
  • Have a blast wielding this delightful brand.


  • Demonstrated high performance and leadership in the communications and public relations fields.
  • Seven or more years experience of effective communications in values-led business, issues advocacy, electoral campaigning or a dynamic government office.
  • Successful track record of progression within PR/Communications field.
  • Ability to create and manage a communications strategy and calendar.
  • Strong writer, able to adopt the SunCommon voice across communication channels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member and leader of a team.
  • Ability to present ideas to executive level.
  • Excellent self-organization and time management skills.Ability to work on tight and moving deadlines.
  • Engaging public speaker with the ability to offer compelling, on-message interviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate an internal message into external soundbites.
  • Ability to create and lead executive and staff-level media trainings.
  • Willingness to pick up the phone and go get the story.
  • Excels at enthusiastic and effective communication skills in person, over the phone, and in writing.
  • Editorial mindset that gets what audiences need and how to create it – including understanding of various news media, their cultures, methods and deadlines (TV, radio, dailies, community papers, magazines, social media influencers & bloggers).
  • Entrepreneurial thinker and doer who sees opportunity in ambiguity and is energized by the prospect of joining the SunCommon solar coaster.
