Summary of Position:
The Director of Development will lead a talented development team, innovating, creating, and executing successful fundraising, marketing, and engagement strategies in support of our mission. Through their donor relations focus, they will work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to deepen relationships with existing donors, attract new donors, and further enhance awareness of our growing impact among donors and other stakeholders. They will also work closely with their team to create compelling online and print content and events for development, the sale of goods and services, and the public. They will also work closely with the Director of Programs and Impact, Finance Director, Board of Directors, and all Managers of our programs and enterprises to further our mission to strengthen community food systems.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Development & Fundraising (40%)
• Develops, implements, and manages a systematic and creative development strategy that inspires philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, corporate donors, and institutions and grows our fundraising base.
• Oversees and informs the creation and execution of marketing strategies that lead to increased donor engagement, product and service sales and a greater mission awareness and appreciation among the public.
• Oversees and guides conception and creative direction of all fundraising communications, including language/messaging, and overseeing the Marketing Manager’s execution of inspiring and compelling print and digital content and collateral.
• Oversees development, ideation, execution, and evaluation of events that engage Vermonters in our mission and open avenues for increased financial support. Represents the Intervale Center at events, assuming a lead role on donor-related events.
• Writes grants and reports in collaboration with Development Manager, Executive Director and Director of Programs and Impact.
• Designs and implements long-term strategies to meet capital project needs and organizational sustainability through Planned Giving and other tools.

Donor Management (40%)
• Develops and executes successful, meaningful, and elegant donor stewardship practices, from moves management to wealth screening to communications and grant writing.
• Leads all facets of donor relationship management and engagement, implementing strategies for continued donor growth, renewal, and retention in partnership with Board, Executive Director, and other staff. • Manages a portfolio of donors and foundation representatives and handles outreach, follow up, submission of applications and reporting, and administrative activities with Development team.
• Oversees the stewardship and administration of funds secured through corporate sponsorships, government grants, events, and other categories.
• Maintains key relationships in philanthropic community and identifies prospective individual, corporate, foundation, and government funders.
• Participates in in-person engagement with donors, volunteers and other partners on farms, through trail walks, over meals or during events as well as through virtual platforms and via email and phone.
• Staffs the Board Development Committee, the Midsummer’s Feast Committee, and serves as lead development steward for all Board members.

Internal & Team Management (20%)
• Contributes to annual growth plans and forecasts; reviews the annual operations plan to identify and categorize donor fundraising potential and donor relations components.
• Prepare budgets and effectively manages financial and personnel resources to achieve organizational goals and objectives. Monitors the Development budget with support from the Development Manager.
• Participates as a member of the senior management team, sharing responsibility for the organization’s ongoing operations, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, hiring and onboarding, and workplace culture.
• Oversees donor database management systems to ensure effective donor tracking.
• Supervises Development Manager, Events Coordinator, and Marketing and Communications Manager, including work plan development, professional development, and team support and structure.
• As with all staff, acts as an ambassador for the Intervale Center as a whole.

Minimum Qualifications:
Please note: In addition to the qualifications outlined below, the hiring team will consider candidates demonstrating comparable qualifications acquired through another combination of education and experience than what is outlined below.

Knowledge and Experience
• Seven years in fundraising, including three years attracting and stewarding major donors and securing gifts.
• Experience working in a development team environment and supervising employees. Minimum three years in management with demonstrated experience managing a team toward results.
• Success securing gifts over 5 figures and comfort with securing fundraising revenue at or above $2 million.
• Experience increasing individual donor giving levels through effective and efficient engagement and stewardship strategies.
• Knowledge or experience related to agricultural development, land management, community development, conservation, food systems, rural economic development and/or small business development. Experience and enthusiasm for event development and implementation with a team.
• Demonstrated understanding of development and fundraising best practices and donor and foundation giving strategies and tools.

Skills and Attributes
• Excellent verbal, written and general communication skills applied to fundraising communications, grant writing, and related public speaking.
• Fluency in marketing concepts, brand strategy, and/or communications, their importance in ensuring brand synergy, and their use in advancing fundraising capacity and sales initiatives.
• Competent user with intermediate understanding of communications and design software and applications preferred, such as Mailchimp, Canva, and social media platforms.
• Demonstrated financial literacy with balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and use of relevant financial management tools.
• Proven ability to successfully manage concurrent projects and prioritize competing responsibilities.
• Demonstrated literacy in and passion for local food, agriculture, Vermont’s rural economy, and/or conservation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft applications with advanced understanding of Excel.
• Proficiency in database management software for donor and fundraising records, experience with Little Green Light preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting Salary: The salary offered will fall between $75,000 and $80,000 and be commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
Benefits: As a full-time employee, the Director will be eligible for participation on our 401(k) with match, earned CTO and sick time, health & dental insurance, life & disability insurance, and other wellness benefits.
Location/Travel: This is a hybrid position based in Burlington, Vermont and may be expected to work remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions. There is no application deadline at this time, and the committee will consider candidates on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
