Salvation Farms’ mission is to build increased resilience in Vermont’s food system through agricultural surplus management. Our programmatic work explores diverse opportunities to respond to Vermont’s farm surplus food in an effort to build food system security and regional food resilience. We run gleaning programs, serve as backbone support to the Vermont Gleaning Collective, and have operated a surplus crop food hub in tandem with job-readiness training for individuals with barriers to employment. Other aspects of our mission integrated into and existing outside of the programs mentioned above include technical assistance, supply chain development, experiential education, community building, cross-sector collaboration, research, advocacy, dialogue facilitation, and state/regional/national engagement.

Position Summary

Salvation Farms’ Development Director is responsible for the successful implementation of Salvation Farms’ annual fundraising plan and communication strategies. Increasing the organization’s visibility and growing its donor base are a lead charge of this position. This staffer oversees all of the communications and fundraising efforts from web to print to in-person – ensuring clear messaging and a steady flow of funding into the organization. Managing many timelines and projects of varying sizes that engage and rely on other team members is a key part of this job.

Core to the Development Director’s role is the responsibility to guarantee consistency and professionalism internally, documenting and refining processes that support our development work, ensuring that they are followed. The Development Director ensures all aspects of Salvation Farms’ public relations and donor outreach strategies are accurate, timely, informative, and consistent. This staffer ensures the organization’s philosophies and culture are integrated into all communications materials in a way that balances our mission and values with our programmatic impact. Maintaining the continuity of brand across all development material – in aesthetics and message – is a key part of this position’s role.

Heart, whimsy, integrity, and introspection are critical to parallel the seriousness and complexity of our mission within our development efforts. Honing and maintaining Salvation Farms’ style, brand, and tone in images and words are core responsibilities of this staff person. An individual with high standards for consistency and attention to detail, the ability to adhere to deadlines, and who truly enjoys working with others will be well suited for this position.

Primary Duties (include but are not limited to)

  • Implement and refine Salvation Farms’ annual development plan
  • Supervise Development and Communications staff
  • Lead donor solicitation to grow and diversify Salvation Farms’ donor base
  • Generate donor analytics to evaluate and inform development strategies
  • Ensure constituent information is cataloged and accurate
  • Support the Executive Director in crafting grant request and reports, managing grant timelines, researching funding sources, and building relationships with foundation representatives
  • Oversee maintenance and creation of all Salvation Farms communication from web to print
  • Ensure Salvation Farms’ style and message guides are maintained and used
  • Serve as Salvation Farms primary media contact
  • Create engagement opportunities for Salvation Farms’ staff and Board of Directors to engage in Development activities

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate as a core member of the staff Leadership Team
  • Participate in budget building, fiscal management, and oversight
  • Serve on Salvation Farms’ fundraising committee
  • Work on specific projects as requested or required by the Executive Director
  • Create and maintain a work plan to stay accountable to performance goals
  • Other duties as assigned

  • The position works out of Salvation Farms’ Morrisville office
  • Travel will be required; mileage is reimbursed for approved work travel
  • Some nights and weekends will be required
  • Some remote work allowed; home office reimbursement is provided

Starting Salary: $57,000-$60,000
