Position Description

VEIC is a sustainable energy company with a mission to enhance the economic, environmental, and societal benefits of clean and efficient energy use for all people. Headquartered in Vermont with offices in Ohio, Washington D.C., and New York state, VEIC has over 32 years’ experience transforming energy systems, specializing in energy efficiency, clean transportation, and renewable energy. In addition to its full-service consulting business, VEIC operates three large-scale energy efficiency utilities: Efficiency Vermont, Efficiency Smart, and the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU); and has launched three mission-aligned subsidiaries that promote community-level solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This internship will support Efficiency Vermont’s research into new uses of smart meter data and other data sources to identify customer energy savings opportunities.  The project might investigate structural, temporal, and/or behavioral characteristics apparent in smart meter data that signal opportunities for energy efficiency, evaluate the drivers for success in participation in an Efficiency Vermont program, develop models for energy use that account for the effects of confounding variables, or even investigate the signature and effects of certain equipment operating in a building or home as seen through energy data.  A candidate that can creatively analyze data and ensure high quality energy data analysis to staff and other key stakeholders will excel in this role.  They will partner with a team of people committed to inclusive and high-impact work while contributing to a mission-driven, creative, enjoyable, and stimulating work environment.

Essential Functions

  • Use analytical tools to develop useful information from available data sources, such as Smart Meter (AMI) data, sub-meter and other sensor data, building operations and production data, public data, etc., in support of efficiency projects;
  • Conduct exploratory analysis of large datasets, drawing insight and value from complex data using statistical tools in the Python programming language;
  • Completion of data analysis reports in support of business plans, initiatives and other programs;
  • Delivery of intricate ideas in an organized manner to stakeholders, in both written and presentation format.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals, and values of VEIC
  • Working towards a bachelor’s, master’s, or other degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, and/or statistics or related field
  • Exposure to fundamental programming concepts
  • Demonstrated ability to use Python, R, MATLAB, or other programming language to analyze, visualize, and draw insights from structured datasets and to pick up other languages quickly
  • Knowledge of basic engineering or scientific analysis techniques
  • Interest in the energy industry, data science, and analytical software development.

Educational/Professional Development Outcomes

  • Intern will improve their skills in written & oral communication, presenting, problem solving/analytical, project management, familiarity with Microsoft Office Suites, Windows OS, and network technologies.
  • Grow their personal and professional network.
  • Experience using Python, R, MATLAB, analyzing smart meter data as it pertains to building energy efficiency.
  • Deep understanding of energy justice and the role data analytics can play in it.
  • Through a series of weekly trainings and development offerings, interns will also learn about topics such as professionalism in the workplace, time management, values-based leadership, the power of volunteerism, ageism in the workplace, effective facilitation & process management, self-marketing & networking, and more!

Working Conditions

Internal – Work is normally performed in climate controlled office environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.). No known environmental hazards are encountered in normal performance of job duties.

External – No travel is required.

Physical Demands

Most duties are performed from a seated position. There is potential for eyestrain from reading detailed materials and computer screen. Deadlines, workloads during peak periods and changing priorities may cause increased stress levels. Work may include occasional pushing, pulling, or carrying objects weighing of approximately 40 pounds such as files, documents, and computer equipment and materials though is not required should this not be possible for any reason. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate computer keyboards at a moderate skill level. Repetitive motion injuries may occur. Company will provide adaptive devices as needed.
