Employers can give employees short-term loans for emergencies or other needs, and some of these can be set up at no cost to the employer.

Tips:

  • Some employers allow employees to take advance payments of their wages for short-term loans. These loans, however, typically don’t address the underlying financial management that causes the need for emergency loans.
  • Some organizations work with a United Way, credit union or bank to implement Working Bridges or a similar program, which gives employees loans during financial emergencies and also promotes employee budgeting and saving skills.
