Elections are the cornerstone of our republic. Unfortunately, however, much of our election infrastructure is outdated and vulnerable to cyberattacks. The ability of foreign or domestic forces to manipulate election results undermines voter confidence, suppresses turnout, and ultimately threatens our democracy. In order to maintain a healthy business climate, our elections must be fair, secure, and accessible. Election reform is not a partisan issue — it’s a national security issue.

Join us on October 12th for a conversation with Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos and Business for America Founder Sarah Bonk about how state officials and Congress are working to upgrade election security.

Jim Condos has been at the forefront of these discussions; in his own state of Vermont and as the current President of the National Association of Secretaries of State. As Vermont’s chief election official, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of elections is one of his highest priorities.

Sarah Bonk, a former Apple product manager, is working to get the bipartisan Secure Elections Act, co-sponsored by Senators Klobuchar (D-MN) and Lankford (R-OK), passed in U.S. Congress. The bill seeks to address vulnerabilities of our election infrastructure with a verifiable post-election auditing process, information sharing between federal and state agencies, and the use of paper ballots.

The Debate

While agreeing that action is needed, Secretary Condos is concerned that the bill’s mandates for post-election audits are too stringent and amount to unfunded state mandates. “It’s important that any legislation passed by Congress regarding election administration includes funding for states to have the resources necessary to continue our work protecting the integrity of our electoral process.”
