Event hosted by: Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility in partnership with The Peace & Justice Center

Join Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility for “Seeing & Disrupting Racism in Capitalism” with The Peace & Justice Center.

In our time together we will hear from community leaders as they define racism and share their personal and professional journeys in social justice. You will gain insight into the many ways in which racism presents itself, ranging from the individual level to the systemic level, including racism in our societal and workplace policies and norms.

Through group exercises, breakout discussions, and the guidance of our facilitators, we will expose the interconnection between racism and capitalism and how it manifests in business organizations. This will be an experiential learning opportunity with a combination of knowledge building, skills practice, and discussion.

About The Peace & Justice Center

Since 1981, the Peace and Justice Center has been a Vermont leader in creating a just and peaceful world, tackling the interconnected issues of human rights and economic, social, and environmental justice. The PJC leads our own campaigns but also works for collective liberation with other local and grassroots organizations and activists on the issues that matter the most to us. We host justice-based workshops and events for the public and individual organizations. We run a small storefront dedicated to creating opportunities to educate local consumers on issues such as child labor and livable wages.

Meet Your Facilitators

Greg Briggs (he\him)

I am passionate about the intersection of faith and social justice, especially water justice and environmental racism. Growing up on an EPA superfund site and as an ordained United Church of Christ minister, I try to utilize my unearned privilege to bring attention to BIPOC leaders and subvert white Christian culture. I recently moved to Vermont from Michigan and am currently interested in developing active groups of peacemakers, interrupters, and crisis responders. I am also a nerd and an upcycling crafter.

Jahdea Clare (she/her)

I am Jahdea. I am a 27 years young black woman hailing from the blue mountains of Portland, Jamaica. I moved to Vermont less than 2 years ago. Social/Racial Justice has been woven into existence through lived experience, reggae music, and education. I have an MSc degree in International Relations. Since moving here, I immediately felt and knew that there is work to be done to achieve major social/economic/political/racial change, and a keen awareness of the interconnectedness of all factors.

Zoraya Hightower (she/her)

I am excited to have joined the Peace & Justice Center as Executive Director in May 2021 while also serving as a City Councilor in Burlington. I have been working on environmental issues across the globe for over ten years, including diverse issues and geographies from renewable energy finance in Kosovo and water access in Tanzania to fishery sustainability in the Philippines and community forest conservation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I completed bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Environmental Policy from the University of Tulsa, and I moved to Vermont in March of 2016 after completing a master’s degree in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Environment. With a strong environmental justice background, I have increasingly focused on economic and social justice, including police funding reallocation to support alternatives, and curbing no-cause evictions across Vermont. I am also a trained facilitator and use Technology of Participation approaches for consensus-building and action planning.
