Impact Giving: Beyond Writing a Check
Tuesday, July 21st

This workshop will take place virtually via Zoom Meeting. 

This workshop will explore strategies and case studies to guide companies on how to think about philanthropy differently, cultivate a culture of philanthropy that engages employees and the community, and use strategic giving as a way to implement and communicate your business’ purpose. Presenters will share a variety of different examples of how they have developed and implemented philanthropic programs and initiatives at their businesses. Attendees will learn from business and non-profit leaders who will present a breadth of theory and real world examples, equipping attendees with ready-to-use tools for developing a culture of philanthropy at their companies.

Meet our presenters:

Anna Grearson, Director of Communications & Community Relations, Union Mutual

Anna is the Director of Communications & Community Relations at Union Mutual, a 7-time Best Place to Work in Vermont. A key piece of the Company’s charitable giving is as the lead sponsor of the Special Olympics VT Summer Games, which parlayed into a record-breaking fundraising effort for the Penguin Plunge in 2020. Grearson is the chair of the Company’s robust giving program.

Mae leads the Community Engagement team at City Market, overseeing programs and implementing initiatives that align with the Co-op’s Global Ends. This work includes overseeing the popular Rally for Change program that has raised over $1 million in five years for area non-profits, awarding funding to organizations working to strengthen the local food system through the Co-op Seedling Grant program, and incentivizing Co-op Members to volunteer out in the community through the Community Outreach/Member Worker program at the Co-op.


Karen Lawson, Chief Creative Officer / Co-owner, Lawson’s Finest Liquids

Karen is a graduate of the University of Vermont, with a Master’s degree in Public Administration. After graduation, Karen had a 20 year career in Vermont state government. The majority of those years were with Department of Corrections as their Housing Coordinator, which provided oversight to transitional housing programs statewide. Additionally, Karen managed the Serious and Violent Reentry grant and the annual Facts and Figures data publication. Karen also worked at the Secretary of State’s office for three years to independently launch the Safe at Home program which provides address confidentiality to victims of violence.  Karen worked part-time for a number of years with Lawson’s Finest before joining full time in 2017. Karen was initially responsible for wholesale distribution logistics, which then transformed to the role of Chief Creative Officer in 2018 upon the launch of the Waitsfield brewery, taproom and retail store. Much of her time is spent on marketing, branding, and philanthropic endeavors, as well as paying attention to all of the fine details that represent the quality of Lawson’s Finest.


Sean Lawson, CEO / Founding Brewer, Lawson’s Finest Liquids

Sean is originally from the New Jersey shore area, where he developed a love of the outdoors at an early age. Sean moved to Vermont in 1988 to pursue studies at the University of Vermont (UVM) and discovered a love of both beer and homebrewing. He graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor’s degree in Ecology and Environmental Studies. Sean’s post-graduate work focused on Forestry and Outdoor Education, with positions as a Park Naturalist at Vermont’s State Parks, a Program Coordinator for the Vermont Monitoring Cooperative forest health project, a wildlife educator with Keeping Track and research work with the University of Vermont as well as The U.S. Forest Service. In 1996, Sean founded the Naturalist Program at Mad River Glen, an outdoor education program that he still leads today, featuring seasonal and full moon guided snowshoe treks, where he met the love of his life Karen! In 2008, after much encouragement from family and friends and accolades for the quality of his homebrew, Sean launched Lawson’s Finest Liquids as a hobby-scale side business in a humble outbuilding next to the Lawson’s family house in Warren, VT. Lawson’s Finest quickly became a highly-sought after Vermont craft beer, sparking an expansion in 2011 at the original location, a contract brewing arrangement in 2014 with Two Roads (launching our #1 flagship – Sip of Sunshine IPA) and culminating in the opening of a new production brewery, taproom, and retail store in Waitsfield, VT in October of 2018


Cari Kelley, Workplace Donor Relations Manager, United Way of Northwest Vermont

Cari Kelley has been the Workplace Donor Relations Manager with United Way of Northwest Vermont since October of 2016. In her role, she work with businesses and their employees on workplace campaigns and Corporate Social Responsibility plans that include education and volunteering. She truly loves the ability to talk with CEOs, executives and employees about the impact that we have on our community and answer their questions. Cari came to United Way after more than 10 years at the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, where she ran all of the Leadership Development and Workforce Education programs, including Leadership Champlain. Before that, she was the Development Director at Make-A-Wish, and Membership Development and Event Management at the Home Builders and Remodelers Association. All of this experience has given her the ability to build the relationships necessary to help businesses understand the work of United Way. Cari is currently a Wish Grantor with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Vermont, on the Board of Destination Imagination, member of the State Rehabilitation Council, and recently named Board Chair of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.
