Business Culture Consultants: Vermont’s Sixth Certified B Corporation Certified B Corps are measured on five impact areas: accountability, employees, consumers, community and the environment.

by Business Culture Consultants on Feb 20th, 2012

Burlington, VT—February 15, 2012—Business Culture Consultants, LLC joins the ranks of leading Vermont companies  Seventh Generation and King Arthur Flour to become the sixth organization in the state to obtain Certified B Corporation status.  Heather Van Dusen of B Lab, the non-profit agency that certifies B Corporations nationwide, says that B Corporation status is recognition of a company’s “high social and environmental impact.” According to B Lab, Business Culture Consultants has donated more than 5% of its profits to charitable organizations, operates out of a facility that is powered by renewable energy and banks with a local bank.

Business Culture Consultants’ founder and owner Flip Brown says: “After eleven years of involvement in Vermont’s socially responsible business community, it is a pleasure and an honor to have an independent organization certify my business as a B Corp.  I look forward to working with my clients to expand their awareness and practice of the multiple-bottom line approach to success and satisfaction.”

"Business Culture Consultants is a good fit as a B Corp because it creates social impact at its client's organizations (most of which are purpose-driven enterprises), while also focusing on creating impact in its community and the environment through its own practices," says B Lab’s Christina Bianco.

According to B Lab:

“Certified B Corporations 1) meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance; 2) legally expand their corporate responsibilities to include consideration of stakeholder interests; and 3) build collective voice through the power of the unifying B Corporation brand.  As of January 30, 2012, there are over 515 Certified B Corporations from over 50 industries, representing a diverse multi-billion marketplace.”

Brown is one of only two solo business owners in Vermont to receive the B Corporation status.  In order to receive certification, Brown completed a 200-question assessment administered by B Lab and has created an amendment to the company articles committing to consider stakeholder interests when doing business.  This means that his focus is not just on shareholders, but the broader public and environment too. B Lab certification is a distinctly different process than the Vermont State statute authorizing a corporate charter as a Vermont Benefit Corporation. More information about the Vermont Benefit Corporations Act can be found online.
