Apply for an Internship

STEP 1:  Verifiy your eligibility:

The Vermont Intern Program is available to any student currently matriculated in an undergraduate or graduate degree at a Vermont College or University, from Vermont and enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree out of state, or any recent graduate up to two years post graduation currently living in Vermont.  You do not have to be a member of Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility to participate.

STEP 2:  Choose an internship to apply for from the list of AVAILABLE INTERNSHIPS

Please do not contact these employers directly! The employers who use our program do so with the understanding that we will accept and route applications for them. Contacting them directly only creates confusion and indicates an inability to follow directions. We appreciate your participation in the application process as outlined below.

STEP 3:  Update your resume and write a cover letter addressed to the employer, including answers to the following questions:

  • What position are you applying for?
  • How would this internship help you meet your professional goals?
  • Why are you passionate about this position and the work the employer does?
  • How do you connect with the employer's mission?
  • What skills do you have that the employer is looking for?
  • How/where did you learn these skills?
  • What makes you unique?
  • What personal strengths would be valuable to an employer or a team?

Use the following naming conventions: CoverLetter_FirstNameLastName and Resume_FirstNameLastName and save the documents as pdf files.

STEP 4:  Apply for an internship or submit your application materials for review by the Vermont Intern Program:

At any time you can view our list of available internships and apply using a simple online form. The form collects your contact information and allows you upload your cover letter, resume and any other documents the employer may require. There are two different ways internships are applied for:

1) Via Email

For most of the positions we list, you will complete a simple online form. The form collects your contact information and allows you to upload your cover letter, resume and any other documents the employer may require. The form along with the materials you upload will constitute your “application”. Once submitted, your application will be forwarded via email to the employer, who will review your application and if interested, contact you for an interview. From this point forward you should expect to communicate directly with the employer. Vermont Intern Program staff are available to you if extra assistance is needed. Note that each position you wish to apply for requires a separate application – even if for the same employer.

2) Via Employer Website

For some of the positions we list, the Vermont Intern Program will assist you with preparing your application materials, but you will actually apply for the position on the employer’s website. In this case, you will upload your materials using one of our forms, and our office will review them. If your materials are ready to submit, we will provide you with a link to submit your application. If your materials need revision, we will return them to you with suggestions for improvement. Please allow 1-2 business days for our review process. Note that it is your responsibility to complete the application process!

STEP 5:  Send an email to letting us know you got an internship.

If you get an internship, please let us know! Any intern placed through our program is eligible for a FREE Student Membership to Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (VBSR), and our funding from the State of Vermont is contingent on our success in placing interns. We are not always notified of intern hires by employers, so your communication is greatly appreciated.
