A New Approach to the Livable Income Issue (2000)

VBSR sees making sure all Vermont employees are earning a living income as not just a "nice thing to do." It is imperative for our economic future. When one company pays its employees so little that they need to rely on social services, we are all subsidizing that business with our taxes. This "corporate welfare" is not a sustainable base for our economy. The policy paper includes a number of suggested solutions. To help Vermont businesses learn how to offer livable income jobs, the VBSR-Research & Education Foundation conducted research with companies that have successfully met this challenge. Using this research, VBSR-REF published a how-to handbook for employers, showing how they can combine above-average employee compensation packages and company profitability (also see the Livable Jobs Toolkit).
