Event Description

A Friend in the Coffee Business

For Paul Ralston, founder of Vermont Coffee Company, the word “friend” takes on larger meaning. “Coffee Roasted for Friends” is not only the company’s slogan, it refers to Paul’s mission to “act like a friend in all aspects of our business.” This means that the company buys only 100% certified organic, fair trade coffee from small non-traditional businesses; treats coffee like produce so that it’s always enjoyed fresh; finds new ways to contribute to the community; and encourages dialogue with neighbors and friends to explore new ideas and promote learning.

Despite his firm commitment to responsible business practices, Paul does not describe Vermont Coffee Company as socially responsible. He maintains that social responsibility is an aspiration and a commitment to a process rather than an end result. Join us to talk with Paul about why “the most socially responsible thing we can do as a business is to succeed.”
