Event Description
Nurturing the Natural Environment and Human Communities
What started in 1994 as Camp Common Ground, a family camp focusing on the arts, music, the healing arts and outdoor recreation, has blossomed into a center that now offers an expanded camp program. In 2004 Common Ground Center (CGC) moved to an old horse farm in Starksboro, and added camps for families with children on the autism spectrum, those with adopted children from China, those who are homeschooling, and those with high stress divorces.
In this new location, CGC also began a program of development that emphasized reuse of existing buildings, minimal impact on the environment, use of recycled and locally found materials, energy efficiency and the use of alternative fuels, clustered development to preserve open space, experimentation with resource-conserving structures, and community and volunteer collaboration. Much of the property’s 680 acres is subject to a conservation easement to restrict development. With farm fields, mountain forests, wetlands, and a creek, there is a diversity of natural habitats and an abundance of wildlife to be explored and protected.
Join us to hear more about the development practices that shaped CGC’s facility, and take a tour of the facility described by one camper as simply “...how the world should be...”
Directions to Event
From Bristol
Go north on Route 116. Stay on Route 116 past the Route 17 turn off and past the "Welcome to Starksboro" sign. Tatro Road will be on your left. There is a sign on the corner which says "Starksboro Daycare". Tatro Road is 7.8 miles from the traffic light in the center of Bristol. Turn left on Tatro Road (please drive slowly because of kids and dogs), drive past the sawmill and over the little bridge. Please park in the field on the right.
From Southern Vermont
Rt. 7 to New Haven , right at intersection in New Haven onto 17 East to Bristol . At 4-way stop in Bristol , stay straight on 17/116. After town of Bristol , 17 splits to right: continue going straight on 116 for 4.4 miles. Turn left onto Tatro Rd. (Starksboro Daycare on corner). Go past sawmill on left. First house on left after you pass over Lewis Creek .
From Burlington and points East
From Interstate 89 get off at Williston Exit 12
From Burlington (North): Turn Right onto Rt. 2A
From Montpelier (South): Turn Left onto Rt. 2A.
Take 2A to end of road, turn left at intersection onto Rt. 116.
Stay on Rt. 116 about 11 miles to town of Starksboro. After you pass the Starksboro Elementary School, go .6 miles further. Take a right on Tatro Rd. (Starksboro Daycare on corner). Go past sawmill on left. First house on left after you pass over Lewis Creek. You're here!
