B Impact Assessment

Get Started on Your SR Journey by Taking the B Impact Assessment

“The B Impact Assessment is all about understanding and managing sustainability impacts. It's a road map to continuous improvement across a triple bottom line. This is a terrific tool for assessing social and environmental impacts, transparency and accountability.” Jed Davis, Director of Sustainability, Cabot Creamery Cooperative

VBSR has teamed up with B Lab to offer VBSR members free access to the B Impact Assessment (BIA)! This free and confidential tool will help you measure your company’s socially responsible business practices and compare them against thousands of other businesses,  supporting your ongoing journey towards social responsibility and sustainability.

We manage what we measure.’ This is one of the most basic truths in business and our members also believe that we ought to measure what matters most. We invite you to join fellow members in this endeavor to measure and manage the individual and collective impact of our businesses. Measure What Matters!

What Gets Measured?

The B Impact Assessment is the most commonly used tool to assess a company’s overall social and environmental performance. It does so by measuring the overall impact of a business on all stakeholders: workers, suppliers, customers, community, and environment.

For example, in the sample score report to the right, you can see that corporate accountability and transparency are areas to measure in your organization's goal of being socially responsible, as are work environment, environmental practices, and much more.

Once these factors are measured, you receive a score report (again, similar to the report on the right), which shows how you scored in each area, as well as a comparison to other companies in similar fields.

How Long Does it Take &
What Does it Cost?

Again, the folks at B Lab have graciously teamed up with VBSR to offer members the chance to take the FREE BIA.

As for your time commitment, the truth is that it varies by the size of the companies and the individual tasked with completing the assessment. Someone with a lot of institutional knowledge at a very small company is going to be able to complete the assessment much quicker than someone with very little institutional knowledge at a much bigger company. But don't worry, whether your company is big or small, if you need any assistance during the process, you can email or call B Lab's Elizabeth Crampton at (610) 296-8283 for help.

The real question is, are you willing to set aside time to complete the assessment, measure what matters, and move forward in your social responsibility efforts? What are you waiting for?

Here's what VBSR Members are saying about their experience:

"If you view the B Impact Assessment as merely a scorecard you are missing one of its key values - it is a blueprint for vital discussions within and without your business to look at what really matters.  You won't agree with all of the constructs, weightings, or validity on every questions, however the "mirroring" it will provide for your organization is profound.  There just isn't a better template out there right now in terms of walking your talk."
- Flip Brown, Business Culture Consultants

"From the first days of our company, Seventh Generation has aspired to be a force for good, using the power of our business to address social and environmental issues. The B Impact Assessment has proved a critical tool helping us assess and make improvements on our journey toward sustainability."
- Ashley Orgain, Corporate Consciousness, seventh GENERATION

"Being in the food business Rhino is continually audited by our customers or outside agencies. We learned a long time ago that continuous improvement comes form putting plans in place, measuring our performance, analyzing the results, and then repeating the process. The B Impact Assessment not only provide a comprehensive audit with a score but also provides best practices and a benchmark. We plan to use the assessment to help guide our improvement efforts from a governance, workers, community and environmental  perspective.
- Ted Castle, President, Rhino Foods
