Meet the Staff


Avram Patt, Interim Director. Avram recently retired after over 16 years as the General Manager at Washington Electric Co-op, a consumer-owned rural electric utility that has been an early leader in promoting energy efficiency and developing local and renewable power supply sources. He previously served as Director of the Vermont Office of Economic Opportunity, administering anti-poverty programs including the Low Income Weatherization Program. Through his new business, Down Patt Consulting, he is available to assist and advise in the areas of energy policy and program development, non-profit strategies, and the cooperative business model. Avram is a member of the Goddard College Board of Trustees and has served on a number of local government, co-op, non-profit and association boards at the local, state and national level. He enjoys playing in a Klezmer band in his free time.





Dan Barlow, Public Policy Manager. Dan joined VBSR as Public Policy Manager in the fall of 2010. He represents VBSR members at the Vermont Statehouse, lobbying on topics such as health care reform, clean energy and employment issues. Previously, Dan worked as a political reporter for the Vermont Press Bureau, was the recipient of the 2009 New England Associated Press award, and was a frequent guest on various Vermont news and analysis television and radio programs. Dan lives in Barre with his girlfriend, Phayvanh Luekhamhan, and their cat, Luna. He also serves on the Barre Cemetery Commission.









Russ Elek, Communication and Membership Manager.  Russ Elek, an Ohio native, moved to Vermont in 2011 and joined the VBSR team in August of 2012 as Program Assistant. Now as VBSR's Communication and Membership Manager, Russ is VBSR's lead for event planning and coordination, membership relations and organizational communication. He has spent his entire professional career working with non-profits in communication-based roles and serves as a volunteer Communication Consultant and Coordinator for the Williston Church of the Nazarene and as the Marketing Lead for Full Barrel Cooperative Brewery & Taproom. He is also a three-term member of Burlington's Community Development Block Grant Committee. When not in the office or shaking hands, Russ can be found on the golf course, playing basketball, or watching Notre Dame Football with his wife and son.







Calen King, Finance Manager & Local First Vermont Program Manager. Calen joined VBSR in October of 2008 as the Office Manager. She now manages VBSR's Local First Vermont program including the Buy Local Book which is produced every fall. In addition, she oversees all financial aspects of VBSR. She was previously with Ben & Jerry’s in Franchise Development and has a background in retail and restaurant management. Calen holds her B.A. in Food and Beverage Management from the New England Culinary Institute. Originally from Shrewsbury, Vermont, she now resides in Hinesburg with her husband Lonnie and her two sons, Oliver and Mitchell.








Roxanne Vought, Internship Program and Special Projects Manager. Roxanne joined VBSR in the spring of 2013 as our Internship Program and Special Projects Manager.  A graduate of UVM, Roxanne started her career through a series of internships with Burlington area non-profits, and continued with management positions at Vermont Mozart Festival, UVM Lane Series and Carbon Harvest Energy. Prior to joining VBSR she spent 8 years with UVM Continuing Education, where she helped students of all ages connect with opportunities for learning, enrichment and professional development. A frequent performer and teacher, Roxanne lives in Burlington with her husband, Nate Plasha, and enjoys time outside, in the kitchen, on stage and in the classroom.
